The United States Treasury on Friday sanctions three hacking groups they claimed were sponsored by North Korea that were allegedly involved in the “WannaCry” ransomware attacks demanding bitcoin cryptocurrency from its victims.

According to Wikipedia, “The WannaCry” ransomware attack was a May 2017 worldwide cyberattack by the WannaCry ransomware cryptoworm. It targeted computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system by encrypting data and demanding ransome payments in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. 

In trying to stop the attack then, Microsoft had released patches of system update to help bypass the virus. System using older versions of Windows system were affected. 

 “WannaCry also took advantage of installing backdoors onto infected systems.”

Agency quoted the US Treasury to have listed the names of the groups as Lazarus Group, Bluenoroff, and Andariel, according to the Treasury.
