A US couple from phoenix got married with their digital identities this weekend in the first marriage to take place in the metaverse.

The wedding ceremony took place in the metaverse with witnesses, supreme court justice officiant Clint Bolick, and virtual crowd of 2000 guests on Saturday according to a cointelegraph report.
The bride and groom, Ryan and Candice Hurley hired Rose Law Group to legally formalise the marriage. The group’s founder and president, Jordan Rose claims it’s the first ever wedding hosted on a blockchain based metaverse.
“Because the metaverse is still in it’s infancy, we have to develop legal paradigm for a legally recognized marriage.
The wedding took place on Rose Law Group Estate on Decentraland. The law group, developed a meta-marriage framework by adopting a “Virtual Premarital Agreement” which identified the couple’s virtual identities and digital assets as recorded on the blockchain.
As it is, a “Meta Marriage License” identified, recorded and tokenized the couple’s virtual identities and place of marriage on the blockchain as a non fungible token (NFT) Rose explained.
The first Asian metaverse wedding also took place just a day after. If Zoom weddings were popular in 2021, the Web.30 and metaverse has captured the imaginations of would-be brides and grooms this year. An Indian couple held their virtual wedding on Sunday February 6 on Hogwarts-theme. The couple Dinesh Kshatriya and his fiance Janaganandhini Ramaswamy have stepped into metaverse trend with the NFT collection showcasing their virtual avatars, and wedding invitations, among other memories having gone live on Guardianlink.io, an NFT collection platform.
According Business Today, Crypto unicorn CoinSwitch Kuber will sponsor the NFT collection of this metaverse wedding, which will essentially be an artwork featuring backgrounds and attires from the Harry Potter and cyberpunk era, in addition to the classic wedding attire featuring the bride, groom, and bride’s late father. As a tribute to one of the harbingers of the concept of the metaverse, and driven by the rapidly growing Web 3.0 community, marketplace BeyondLife.Club has created an NFT, themed around the movie The Matrix, in the Indian language showcasing the names of the bride and the groom. This exclusive NFT collection comprises 12 NFTs out of which 11 unique NFTs are of the bride and groom’s virtual avatars, projected in traditional as well as western attire with and without the bride’s late father and 1 NFT of the wedding invitation consisting of 50 copies, according to a statement by GuardianLink.io.
It’s not clear if any of this metaverse weddings are legally recognized.
