NITDA warns Truecaller on the safety of Nigerians.
The National Information Technology Agency expressed its disappointment towards the bridge of Privacy Laws in Nigeria.
According to the Director General/CEO of the agency, Kashifu Inuwa, the agency discovered that the Truecaller Privacy Policy is not in compliance with global laws on data protection and the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) in particular.
He further disclosed that there are over seven million Nigerians who are active users of the Service. Its important therefore to enlighten the public on some of the areas of non-compliance as well as guide those affected.

‘‘The provision of the Truecaller Privacy Policy is clearly excessive and invasive of the privacy of its users. Article 2.3(2)d of the NDPR provides – when assessing whether consent is freely given, utmost account shall be taken of whether the performance of a contract, including the provision of a service, is conditional on consent to the processing of Personal Data that is not necessary (or excessive) for the performance of that contract,’’ said NITDA.
The Agency has urged all Nigerians to take full right of their privacy and unregister themselves from being available online through truecaller search.
Initial investigations show that Truecaller Privacy Policy is not in compliance with the global privacy laws and that of Nigeria on Data Protection (NDPR).
The Information Technology regulator (NITDA warns Truecaller) has urged Nigerians to ensure the safety of their privacy. The institution assures to continue to making sure all digital providers keep to the privacy laws protecting the privacy of Nigerians.
