Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging and crypto friendly mobile app has been arrested at Paris-Le Bourget Airport for alleged offences related to his messaging app.
Local sources had reported that Durov was travelling on his private jet from Azerbaijan and was arrested in France through an arrest warrant targeting him as part of a preliminary investigation.
Why was Durov arrested today?
Following his arrest, the authorities alleged that he had failed to take action against the harmful use of Telegram. Also he was accused of not preventing violence against minors, including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, and organised crime, through his messaging app.
Russia’s embassy in France has demanded consular access to the 39-year-old Franco-Russian billionaire.

Public Comments after Durov’s arrest
The Tech mogul and billionaire, Elon Musk has criticised Durov’s arrest, saying, “It’s 2030 in Europe, and you’re being executed for liking a meme.”
Also, Tucker Carlson had called for the release of Pavel Durov who is currently being held in French custody.
Toncoin market reaction to the Durov’s arrest
The Open Network which was initially established by Telegram before it became a community-driven project and has now prioritized building on the Telegram messaging app dropped 15% following the news of the Telegram CEO arrest.
The price of Toncoin (TON) fell as much as 18% to below $5.53 followed by Notcoin the top meme coin on the TON blockchain which dropped over 20%.
However, some French users of the Telegram messaging app have reportedly geared up to protest in France for the release of Durov. Currently the hashtag #freedurov is trending on Twitter.
