In a Bid to Achieve Digital Economy Goal, NITDA Launched a New ICT Hub in Portharcourt for Tech and Blockchain Startups
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA builds an Information Technology Innovation and Incubation Park Building at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State as part of its ICT projects to support tech and other Blockchain startups
The project, which was commissioned by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ibrahim (Pantami). The new tech hub is aimed at supporting indigenous tech and blocking startup projects solving real life issues using emerging techs like blockchain, artificial intelligence and others.
Speaking at the commissioning, the minister said that the ICT Innovation and Incubation Park Building will support tech innovators. The hub will also groom various tech and blockchain startups in Nigeria to create more employment for the youths.
The digital economy minister said that during his time as the director-general of NITDA, he conceived the idea to build ICT Skills Centres in the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. And now to achieve digital economy goal of the country he will make sure the hub achieves it’s goals for tech and blocking startups.
“We discovered there is no intervention by NITDA in University of Port Harcourt. Though there was no written application from the management of the University, but we considered building this Innovation and Incubation Centre because the institution is very strategic in the South-south,” he said.
Early this year, the minister issued Nigerian Data Protection Regulations following the truecaller privacy bridge which NITDA cautioned the citizens to avoid. The regulations will help to lower the users privacy bridge by companies.
Moreover, 27 Data Protection Compliance Organisations has been lincensed by the ministry. There are still over five million data collectors and processors who are yet to comply with the new regulations.
NITDA previously announced its plans to employ blockchain technology in privacy data protection and other sectors of the government. This will ensure that private data of citizens are not compromised by fraudsters.
This will also ensure transparency among the owners of the data and the managing organization because everything done with the data is publicly recorded on chain.
