UCC to Utilize DLT (Blockchain) For SIM Card Registration and Verification in Uganda

    The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has recently partnered with CryptoSavannah and FSD Uganda to utilize Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) Blockchain in Sim Card registration and verification in Uganda.

    UCC explained that the partnership with FSD Uganda (Project Sponsor) will help in maintaining the highest standard in data protection in the country’s telecom industry.

    CryptoSavannah, a digital transformation company at the forefront of blockchain innovation in Africa notes that the partnership will help in reducing the friction and fraud in the identity management system in the country. 

    Blockchain technology adoption in Uganda is growing at a good pace covering the Southern part of the continent alongside its other counterparts.

    “Improved SIM card registration and verification will also lead to better KYC for the financial sector in Uganda, and unlock the potential for open data markets.”

    Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSD Uganda), an independent non-profit company committed to promoting greater access to financial services in Uganda also notes that,

    “With enhanced security, the application of distributed ledger technology will reduce the risk of fraud and identity theft associated with increased use of mobile financial services.”

    Going further the organisation explained that, “The technology will enhance digital safety & security of SIM cards aligned to the Uganda National Development Plan III digitization objectives – standardizing provision of digital services & promoting data Interoperability.”
